Why does nobody talk about how a $12 oven thermometer saved my baking and my ego
I bought a cheap $12 oven thermometer after my third batch of cookies came out looking like charcoal briquettes, and it turns out my oven runs 50 degrees hotter than the dial says. That little thing has been the only reason my banana bread and roasted veggies stopped setting off the smoke alarm. My old roommate swore his oven was fine, but he never tested it and just kept burning frozen pizzas every single time. Has anyone else checked their actual oven temp, or are you all just trusting the knob like I used to?
The line about your oven running 50 degrees hotter than the dial really hits home. I always assumed my oven was close enough and that burnt cookies were just me being bad at baking, which wrecked my confidence for a while. Then I stuck a cheap thermometer in there and found out mine runs about 40 degrees hot too, so all those times I blamed myself were really just the oven lying to me. Now I check it before anything important, and my cookies actually come out the same every time instead of me guessing.
