My toaster oven caught a bagel on fire at 7:12am and I just stood there watching it
Last Tuesday I put a everything bagel in my toaster oven and set it to 400 like always, then walked off to check my phone. About 4 minutes later I smell something wrong and look over and there's actual flames inside the glass door, little orange tongues just dancing on top of the bagel. I didn't unplug it, didn't grab the fire extinguisher sitting 6 feet away in the pantry, I just stood there in my socks watching it like it was a campfire. My wife came down the stairs and yelled at me to do something, so I finally popped the door open and smoke rolled out across the whole kitchen. The bagel was black on top but somehow still cold in the middle, which I still don't understand. Took 3 days to get the burnt smell out of the curtains and the smoke alarm kept chirping at 2am like it was mad at me. Has anyone else just frozen up watching their breakfast turn into a campfire, or is that just a me thing?
Freezing up in a fire is way more normal than people admit. My brain does the same thing, it just goes blank and watches. The cold middle part is wild though, that means the flames were only on the outside and the inside never got hot. Next time just unplug it and toss a lid on top, no air means no fire. Also your smoke alarm chirping at 2am was probably the battery dying, not it being mad at you.
