Guy at work laughed at my envelope system until he tried it
He saw me counting out cash for groceries at lunch and said 'you still do that old school stuff?' Three months later he came back asking how to start because his credit card minimums were eating his paycheck. That $4.50 coffee habit he joked about was costing him $135 a month with interest.

Oh, I'm the last person who should be laughing at anyone about money habits. My first grown-up budget was written on a napkin and I somehow convinced myself a gym membership I never used was an "investment." The coffee thing gets people every time, I think we all have that one little expense that adds up way faster than we expect. It's funny how the old school methods always seem to come back around when the credit card bills get real. I bet that coworker is now the one giving out envelope system tips during lunch.

Oh man, it's always the people who clown on something the loudest that end up being the biggest converts later. It's like there's this whole cycle where fancy new stuff gets hyped up until reality hits, then everyone circles back to the simple things that actually work.
