Hot take: Hostels aren't always cheaper than hotels anymore

I was booking a weekend in Austin last month and the cheapest hostel dorm bed was $52 a night. I checked Hotels.com as a joke and found a Motel 6 with my own room for $58. That's $6 more for a private bathroom and no snoring strangers... I get that hostels have kitchens and social stuff but when the price gap is that small it changes the math. Has anyone else run into this where hostels lost their price advantage?
