A travel blogger once wrote about buying a cheap rain poncho before a hike. It cost maybe five bucks but saved a soaked phone and a ruined day. Sometimes the smallest purchase is the best insurance.

Seriously, a reusable water bottle with a filter. Paid like thirty bucks, but it meant I never bought overpriced bottled water for two weeks. That stuff adds up fast.
