Backpack vs. wheeled luggage for budget Europe trip?
I'm heading to Spain for 10 days this fall and I can't decide between bringing my 40L backpack or a small wheeled suitcase. I've read that backpack saves you money on bus/train fees since you can walk everywhere, but I've also heard cobblestone streets in places like Seville wreck wheels fast. Last time I carried a backpack through Madrid in August and my shoulders were toast by day 3. What's your experience been with luggage choice and actually saving cash on transport?

I mean "shoulders were toast by day 3" is exactly why I'd go with the wheeled bag, idk. I feel like people overthink the cobblestones but in my experience that's a short-term annoyance versus sore shoulders every single morning of your trip.

Backpacks let you keep your hands free for coffee, maps, and phone though, and that trade-off is worth it for me every time. Plus I'd rather have tired shoulders than be that person dragging a suitcase up three flights of stairs in a tiny hostel.
