My attempt at a $5 dinner turned into a kitchen science experiment

Last month I tried to stretch a single chicken breast into three meals by making a huge pot of soup with just broth and some old carrots. I forgot to check the broth box and accidentally used the super salty kind, so the whole thing tasted like ocean water. What's your best trick for fixing a meal that's way too salty?

Honestly, just throw in a peeled raw potato and let it simmer for a bit, it actually soaks up a ton of salt.

Oh man, that potato trick from @phoenixd97 is a lifesaver. I did the exact same thing with a pot of chili last winter, dumped in a whole can of salty tomatoes by mistake. Chopped up a potato, let it cook for twenty minutes, and it was almost edible again. Still a little salty, but at least you could eat it without drinking a gallon of water after.

Try adding a splash of vinegar or lemon juice next time, it balances out saltiness really well. I've also had luck tossing in a handful of uncooked rice in a cheesecloth bag and fishing it out after ten minutes. The potato trick works, but it can leave your food tasting a bit starchy if you leave it in too long. Honestly, the best fix is to just double the batch if you have the ingredients, dilutes the salt perfectly.
