I had $20 left for the week and had to pick between rice and beans or eggs and bread
Back in my early 20s I was living in a tiny apartment in Portland and had exactly $20 to feed myself for five days, so I stood in the grocery aisle doing math in my head. I went with the big bag of rice and two cans of beans instead of the eggs and bread because I figured it would stretch further, and honestly it worked out fine, I ate rice and beans with hot sauce for almost every meal that week. These days I still make a version of that same pot and it reminds me of those lean times whenever I smell cumin. Funny how a meal you ate out of need ends up being one you actually crave later on. What cheap staple got you through a tight stretch, and do you still make it now?

Man, the cumin thing got me. That smell is like a time machine straight back to being broke and figuring out how to make the same pot last. And you're right that it goes the other way too, once you eat something enough times out of need it stops being a sad meal and just becomes your meal.
