Vent: used a $3 drain snake from Dollar Tree and it snapped inside my pipe, now I'm out $150
Last Tuesday I tried to clear my bathroom sink with that cheap 25 foot snake from Dollar Tree because a plumber quoted me $180. The thing kinked and snapped off about 6 feet in, so I had to call the plumber anyway and he charged me $150 to pull it out plus clear the clog. Has anyone found a cheap snake that actually holds up, or am I better off just using baking soda and vinegar?
A $3 snake that snaps inside your pipe is basically the tool version of a bad roommate, it makes a mess and then you pay to get rid of it. The baking soda and vinegar trick is great for keeping a drain fresh but it will not touch a real hair clog six feet down. Spend the $25 on a decent hand auger from a hardware store, or just accept that the plumber's $180 is the honest price of not making things worse.
