The week my emergency fund saved my car from the junkyard

Last month I had a string of bad luck that almost broke me. My alternator died on a Tuesday, then my fridge stopped cooling on Thursday. I had about $400 saved up from skipping takeout for 6 months, and it covered the $350 repair on my old Honda Civic. The fridge I just packed with ice and moved stuff to a cooler for a week until payday. Has anyone else had a moment where a little bit of savings kept them from a total disaster?

A whole week with a cooler for a fridge, that sounds absolutely brutal.

Oh come ON, a cooler for a week is NOT that bad. People act like we're out here in the wilderness with nothing but a bucket of ice. I've done longer trips with just a decent cooler and some dry ice, it works FINE. You just have to be smart about what you put in there and toss the ice packs every couple days.
