My brick trowel handle snapped mid-wall yesterday

I was laying a corner on a house in Oak Park and the handle on my Marshalltown trowel just gave out. I had put about 40 bricks down when the wood split right where it meets the tang. No warning, just a crack and suddenly I'm holding a handle and the blade is on the scaffold. I had to drive 20 minutes to the nearest supply house to grab a new one. Anybody else had a trowel handle fail on them like that?

Last year I would have sworn my Marshalltown was bulletproof, but then I saw a buddy's handle split clean in half on a cold morning and it changed my whole opinion. Mine is about 3 years old and I've been watching it closer ever since, especially after hearing stories like yours. It seems like the wood they're using now isn't what it used to be, maybe they're drying it too fast or something. I'm thinking about trying one of those rubber handle models next time, your mileage may vary though.

You're right, that handle story honestly changed my mind too.
