I used to think the desert was just brown and empty
I drove through the Sonoran Desert last month, near Tucson, and something clicked. I pulled over to check a tire and just looked around. At first glance, it's all dust and rock. But I crouched down and really looked. There were these tiny, bright pink flowers on a cactus no taller than my hand. I saw a palo verde tree with these thin green branches, and a bunch of little bees working on it. It wasn't empty at all. It was just... quiet. I guess I always pictured plants as big and leafy, but these guys are tough. They make do with almost no water. It changed how I see the whole place. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where you really saw a plant or a landscape for the first time?

My buddy had that happen with a pine tree... he always just saw them as big green things by the highway. Then one winter he was stuck at a cabin and really looked at one up close. He told me about the different kinds of needles, and how the bark had all these deep cracks and patterns... he said it stopped being just a tree and looked more like a whole little world. He sent me a picture of a single pinecone and it was wild how much detail was in it. Kinda makes you wonder what else we're all just walking past without really seeing.

Same thing happened to me with a dandelion.
