Tried PVA vs paste for a sewn board binding and paste won hands down

Did a regency style binding last month for a client in Louisville. Used PVA on the first go like I always do. Boards popped off after a week. Redid the whole thing with wheat paste and it's solid as a rock now. Anyone else have better luck with paste over PVA for certain structures?

...and then you have to factor in how the spine piece takes the glue too. I switched to paste for sewn boards after a couple failures with PVA on rounded spines. The key thing for me was the tack. PVA grabs too fast and you can't adjust the board position. Paste gives you a solid 45 seconds to get everything lined up perfect. Did you notice the same thing with the joint area, where the paste gives you more working time before it sets?

Nah @anderson.spencer you're spot on with the working time thing. I had the same issue with PVA on a flat back spine a few months back and it locked up before I could nudge the board over. Switched to a rice paste mix and never looked back. That extra 30-40 seconds makes all the difference.
