Took apart a used textbook I bought for $8 and found stitched signatures instead of glued pages
I got this old biology textbook from a thrift store in Akron for my own binding practice. When I cut it open to study the structure, it had real stitched signatures sewn together, not just a glued spine like most modern books. This thing was printed in 1978 - when did publishers stop doing the quality work?

Doesn't it seem like everything these days is made to fall apart? I swear, my grandma still has a blender from the 70s that works Perfectly, but my phone cracks if I look at it wrong. It's the same with clothes too, you can find old t-shirts that last decades but new ones get holes after three washes. People used to build things to last because they Cost more, but now it's all about making everything cheap so you have to buy a new one. That book was built with care, and now they just slap some glue on it and call it a day.

Yeah if the signatures are still tight you can probably reinforce the whole thing with some PVA and a new spine lining. I've rescued a few old textbooks from goodwill that way. Just watch the thread tension when you're sewing it back up.
