I started using a 1-inch binder's brush for paste and it's a game changer

I was always getting paste on the spine edges when doing rounded backs, you know, the usual mess. My friend in Portland said to try a cheap 1-inch flat brush from the hardware store instead of my usual round one. It gives way more control and I haven't had a spill in the last five books. Has anyone else switched up their basic tools like that?

Sounds like a messy solution to me. I've found a good round brush gives better coverage in the hinge.

Round brushes can leave streaks on textured surfaces. A small foam wedge gets right into the hinge gap without any mess. It presses the paint into the corners a round brush just can't reach. The finish ends up much smoother and more even. You should give it a try next time.
