Blew $85 on a corner rounding tool that chewed up my leather instead of cutting it
I bought one of those corner rounding tools at a supply shop in Allentown about 6 months ago for $85 because the guy behind the counter swore it would clean up my book board corners in one press. First time I used it on a batch of quarter bound journals, it tore through the leather like a dull cookie cutter and left fuzzy edges I had to trim by hand anyway. I lost a full weekend redoing 12 covers, plus about $40 in goatskin I couldn't salvage. The blade had a tiny burr on it, but by the time I figured that out I had already wrecked my third piece. I tried sharpening it, tried a lighter press, tried soaking the leather a bit first, nothing worked. Now I just use my old $12 corner nippers and a sanding block and the corners come out cleaner than anything that tool ever did. Save your money unless you're doing hundreds of identical boards, honestly. What do you all use for rounding corners on leather bound covers, and has anyone found a tool that actually works without tearing?
Man, that story about the fuzzy edges and $40 in ruined goatskin hurts just to read. I've had tools promise way more than they deliver too, so you're not alone in getting burned like that.
