PSA: the 'too many characters' excuse in our book debates is lazy, and Marco from the Tuesday group proved it
We were fighting over whether a 900 page doorstop was worth the time, and Marco pulled out a note card with 14 names on it, one for each main character. He said the length wasn't the problem, keeping track was, and suddenly half the room went quiet. I still think a bloated cast is a fair reason to bail, but he made me wonder if we just blame page counts when we're really mad at our own notes. How do you all keep a big cast straight without giving up by chapter 10?
half the room went quiet" is the real tell here, cause nobody actually counts pages, they just feel lost and blame the book's size. Marco's notecard trick works because it turns a vibe into a checklist, and most big casts fail for a dumb reason: too many names that sound alike or show up once and vanish for 200 pages. Give every character one weird tag you can't mix up and the "too many characters" problem mostly goes away.
