Watching a new guy burn through a cutting torch in 20 minutes flat
Last Tuesday up in Gary Indiana I saw this apprentice try to cut a 3/4 inch steel plate without checking his oxygen valve first. He had the tank cranked way too high and just fried the tip in no time. Foreman said that's a $60 mistake for a new nozzle and a half hour of setup time wasted. Have you guys seen this kind of thing happen on site too?

That bit about not checking the oxygen valve first really hits home. I did the exact same thing as a new guy, wasted a whole tank of oxygen and a tip before I learned to always double check those valves. After that I started keeping a spare torch setup ready to go on my truck, so if I mess up a tip I can swap it out in minutes instead of losing half the day. It's just one of those lessons you gotta learn the hard way I guess, but once you burn through that first tip you never forget to check again.

Kinda like learning to tie your boots by tripping over your own laces first.
