Switched from a straight grinder to a needle gun for cleaning welds and never looked back
Used to spend 30 minutes grinding down a single header flange at the Evansville shop until an old foreman handed me a needle scaler. Now I clean a weld joint in under 5 minutes and get a smoother finish to boot. Anybody else discover a simple tool swap that saved your back and your patience?

Honestly I gotta push back on that "smoother finish" part. A needle gun leaves a textured surface that drives me nuts compared to a grinder with a good flap disc.

Double down on that - I actually prefer the texture from a needle gun for getting into tight spots before paint, way less likely to gouge the metal than a flap disc running too hot.

Yeah, I gotta call out that "smoother finish" claim a little bit. A needle gun is great for speed and getting into corners, but it leaves a pretty rough surface compared to a flap disc. I've used both plenty of times and if you're going for a flat, even surface before paint or powder coat, the grinder still wins every time. The needle scaler is more for getting scale off, not for a smooth profile.
