TIL that a random board game night in Portland saved my rainy weekend

In my experience, I was stuck in Portland for a couple days with nothing to do because of a cancelled flight. I looked online and found a board game geek meetup at a coffee shop. Your mileage may vary, but the place was packed with people playing everything from quick card games to big strategy ones. I joined a table trying out a new space game, and the folks were really nice about teaching me the rules. Take this with a grain of salt, but I ended up making a few friends and we played for hours. It totally turned my boring wait into a fun memory. Now I think hunting for game groups is a must for solo trips. Has anyone else stumbled on a cool game spot while traveling? I would love to hear about places with a good vibe for newcomers.

Your hunt for game groups shows how random plans often make the best travel memories.

Totally, @viola857, like that random bar I found in Copenhagen.

Wandering into a local chess club in Budapest taught me more about the city than any guidebook ever could. @viola857, your point about game groups really hits home because those unplanned stops force you to meet people you'd otherwise miss. Like that time I got pulled into a street soccer game in Mexico City, and suddenly I'm laughing with locals and learning slang over cheap tacos after. Those random moments stick in your mind because they feel honest, not like you're just checking off sights. You're just living in a new place for a bit, and that's the stuff you remember years later. It's like the trip becomes yours, not some planned out tour.
