Spent 4 hours sorting a 500-piece puzzle by color before noticing the edge pieces were missing

I was getting ready for game night last Saturday and decided to organize this thrifted puzzle I found. I laid out all 482 pieces by shade groups on my dining table, which took forever. After all that sorting, I started on the border and realized there were zero edge pieces with the straight sides. Checked the box again and saw '500 pieces - includes 18 missing' written in tiny pencil marks on the inside flap. Has anyone else wasted time on a puzzle that wasn't complete from the start?

It's like buying a bag of chips and finding more air than chips, just disappointing.

A buddy of mine bought a big bag of tortilla chips from a store brand a few weeks back. He opened it up and maybe a third of the bag was actually chips, the rest was just air and a bunch of broken crumbs at the bottom. He was so mad he took a picture of it and sent it to the company. They sent him a coupon for a free bag, but he said it wasn't worth the hassle.
