My buddy Mike convinced me Catan is best with just three players
He said the four-player games drag too much and I finally saw his point after a two-hour game last Friday where nobody traded for 45 minutes.

Oh man, that's actually a really good point and I totally get it. Idk, it's kinda like how in real life, three people can actually get stuff done way faster than four. With four, someone always gets left out or just checked out, and nobody wants to be the one to start trading again after a lull. Maybe it's just me but I've noticed that in groups of three, people actually pay attention more and feel like they have to participate. Three feels like a focused conversation where everyone has to chip in, while four can turn into two separate side chats.

And isn't that exactly how it goes with carpooling too though? I've noticed that when you have four people in a car, someone always ends up stuck in the middle seat or has to listen to two people talking across them. But with three, everybody just kind of naturally fits and the conversation flows way better because no one's getting squished or forgotten. It's the same with video games too, like in those co-op survival games where three people can actually divide up tasks without stepping on each other's toes. Add a fourth and suddenly you've got two people trying to gather the same resources while someone is just standing around. Three just seems like the sweet spot for not feeling like you're either carrying the team or completely useless.
