Hot take: most "board game cafes" are just overpriced places to eat while ignoring the game
Went to one in Austin last month and spent $15 on a latte while the staff spent more time explaining the menu than the actual rules of Spirit Island.

Did you actually sit down to play a game or did they just expect you to treat it like a coffee shop with board games on the shelf? Cause that $15 latte better come with someone walking you through the whole rulebook step by step. What game did you end up playing or did you just leave?

Right, that's exactly the thing. I sat down with a friend and we were just kind of left to figure it out ourselves, which would be fine except I picked up a game called "Wingspan" and that rulebook is no joke. Ended up just playing a quick round of Uno instead because we were too tired to figure out the bird feeding and egg laying stuff after a $14 chai latte. So yeah, I totally get your frustration.
