Why does nobody talk about how hard it is to see tempering colors in bad light?

Isn't this just making a simple task too complicated? Most decent workshops have enough light to see what you're doing if you know how to look. People act like tempering colors are invisible without perfect conditions, but that's not really true. Your eyes adapt, and the color changes are more obvious with experience. It's one of those things that gets easier the more you do it, so maybe the talk is overblown.

Honestly jordanc68 is right that your eyes adapt with practice. Tbh I tried tempering some small tools in my dim garage last winter and gave up, just used my phone flashlight like a goof. It really is one of those skills where bad light just makes the beginner phase way harder.

Start with proper lighting. It makes the color changes obvious instead of a guessing game.
