Old timer told me my hammer blows were too heavy and my work was showing it
Dude said I was driving the steel too deep and ruining the grain structure on a damascus billet. Switched to lighter taps after that and my pattern welds came out way cleaner - anyone else get told they're using too much force?

I mean, maybe the old timer was just used to softer steel and you're actually onto something with those heavy hits.

Heavier blows ruining grain structure though? @thomas862 if you're hammering hot steel too hard you're literally smashing the layers flat instead of letting them weld properly. My first billet looked like garbage because I was trying to power through everything like Thor. Switched to lighter taps and suddenly the pattern popped way cleaner. Old timers usually know their stuff even if they sound grumpy about it.
