Had to pick between a coal forge and propane when I set up my shop last year
I went with propane mostly because I'm in a residential area near Madison and didn't want the neighbors complaining about smoke. Built a simple venturi burner setup for about $150 total. It works fine for most stuff but I still can't get the even heat I need for welding billets over 2 inches. Anyone else run into this switching from coal?

Honestly, try a blown burner setup, it fixed my uneven heat issues for thicker billets.

That's exactly the problem I fought with for months on my propane setup. @max808 is right about blown burners, I swapped to one last winter and it made a huge difference for welding billets. The venturi just can't push enough air deep into thicker material, you get a hot skin and a cold core. I ended up building my own blown burner from a modified weed burner tip and a small bathroom fan motor, cost me maybe $60 total and it runs way more even than any venturi I tried.
