My binge of The Wire hit a brick wall after season 3

I was tearing through The Wire on HBO Max, got to the end of season 3 with those awesome Stringer Bell scenes, but then it just stopped. The streaming service dropped the show without warning, and now I cannot find season 4 anywhere legal in my area. Has anyone else had a streaming platform yank a show mid-binge and what did you do to finish it?

HBO Max dropping a show mid-stream is pretty on brand for them these days. Three seasons of The Wire is a solid run, you got the good stuff with Stringer. Honestly, you could just stop there and pretend season 4 doesn't exist. Plenty of people think the show peaked in season 3 anyway. Or you could go buy the DVD box set for twenty bucks at a pawn shop and watch it on a laptop. This is a minor inconvenience, not a crisis.

No wait, I actually just read an article about how streaming services are quietly dropping shows to avoid paying residuals and royalties longer term. It said something like once a show hits a certain number of seasons, the licensing fees go way up or the cast contracts change. So instead of honoring that, they just dump the show and hope nobody notices. Feels shady honestly because you're right that season 4 of The Wire is absolutely essential, that's where the school system stuff really hits hard and you see where everything is heading. The whole Omar and Brother Mouzone thing in season 3 was iconic but you'd miss so much character growth if you stopped there. And yeah you can hunt down a DVD set but it's 2025, I shouldn't have to go to a pawn shop just to finish a show they advertised as part of their library.
