I finally learned why my chain keeps stretching, and it was my own fault for 6 years
I was in my shop in Sacramento swapping out a chain on a customer's Trek for the third time in a year and got curious enough to actually measure it. Turns out I had been checking chain wear wrong since I started turning wrenches in 2018. I always used the old ruler method and eyeballed it, but a guy at my local shop handed me a Park Tool CC-4 and showed me that my 'good' chains were sitting at 0.75% wear, way past the 0.5% cutoff for his 11 speed setup. He told me the pin-on-a-stick gauges push the rollers apart and give you a false reading, which I had no idea about. Started measuring every bike that comes through my stand now and I've already caught two customers running chains that were eating their cassettes. What gauge are you all running, and do you trust the cheap ones or stick with the Park or Shimano tools?
