DAE see folks set chain tension by feel instead of checking the spec sheet?
I keep running into this at the co-op in Tucson where I volunteer on Saturdays. People bring in bikes with chains so tight you can play a note on them, and they swear it feels right because the bike 'pedals snappy.' On a single speed or a hub gear, you want about half an inch of up and down play at the middle of the chain, and I've measured brand new hubs that got wrecked in under 400 miles because of this. The part that gets me is how many of these same folks will torque every other bolt on the bike to spec. I started carrying a little ruler in my apron and showing people the number instead of just telling them, and it lands way better. Has anyone found a trick that actually gets through to the 'I've always done it this way' crowd?
