Customer called me out on dirty chain lube overspray
A guy brought his road bike in last week and pointed at the black gunk all over his chainstay and rear derailleur. He said 'you guys just spray and walk away dont you.' Honestly he was right I was being lazy. Now I wipe down the chain and cassettes before I lube and put a rag behind the cassette to catch overspray. Takes an extra 2 minutes but the bikes look way cleaner. Anyone else have a customer call them out on something basic like that?

He said 'you guys just spray and walk away dont you'" - honestly, that sounds like a win to me. A little chain lube overspray just means the bike is getting lubed proper, and it dries to a protective layer anyway. If customers are gonna nitpick about some dark spots on the chainstay instead of a smoother drivetrain, maybe they should buy a ceramic coating and chill out.

It's funny how people get hung up on little stuff like that. In my experience, the older a customer gets, the more they seem to focus on a clean bike over a quiet one. I've seen guys spend twenty minutes wiping down a frame but skip regular chain maintenance, then wonder why their drivetrain wears out in a season. That overspray is just a sign the job got done, like a little patina on a truck that's actually been used for work. Take it from someone who's been turning wrenches for a while, a chainstay with some lube marks is a happy chainstay. People just need to pick a priority and stick with it, you can't have a silent, spotless bike that also shifts like butter.
