A guy at the bike swap in Portland swore by WD-40 on chains and my drivetrain lived to tell about it
I was at the bike swap in Portland a couple months back and this old guy running a table of used cassettes told me to stop wasting money on fancy chain lube and just hit it with WD-40 every ride. I laughed it off at first but my chain was squeaking bad on my commuter so I tried it for a month straight. The chain stayed quiet, shifted fine, and when I finally pulled it off to measure stretch it was still under 0.5 percent wear. I know the whole debate about WD-40 washing out factory grease, but for a beater bike doing 8 miles a day in the rain it honestly worked out okay. Has anyone else run a chain on the cheap stuff long term and actually tracked the wear?
