That so-called 'haunted song' from 1962 with the broken organ finally clicked for me at 3am last night.
I thought people were just memeing about 'The Monster Mash' sounding creepy until I heard a lo-fi remix that turned the off-beat drum machine into actual atmosphere, has anyone else had a bad song reveal something new through a weird cover or edit?

Are you sure it's not just the lo-fi filter doing the work? I listened to a slowed down version of "The Monster Mash" once and it still sounded like goofy Halloween novelty music to me, just muddier. The original 1962 record has that broken organ sound because the producer literally didn't know how to tune it, not because it was some deep artistic choice. I think people hear what they want to hear when they're tired at 3am. A remix can add atmosphere but it can't make bad songwriting deep.

Yeah but that's exactly the point though. The 3am tired brain thing is real, your defenses are down and you're not overanalyzing every little thing like you would during the day. A good remix can totally trick you into hearing a song differently just by changing the pacing and adding space around the notes.
