That one guy in the hardware store who changed how I see ceiling fans
I was at Lowe's in Portland last month staring at box fans for my workshop when this older dude in a stained flannel just walks up and says 'you're overthinking it, son, get the 20 inch with the metal blades.' He then spent 15 minutes telling me about how he's cooled his garage with the same model since 1989. I bought the fan he pointed at and honestly it's the best 35 bucks I ever spent. Has anyone else had a random stranger just drop knowledge on you like that?

Actually, I kind of disagree with that. I had a similar thing happen at Home Depot years ago where a guy swore by these expensive brushless motor fans and I bought one on his word. Thing died on me after two summers and I was out 80 bucks. Sometimes the random advice is good, sometimes it's just some dude who got lucky with his specific setup.

My neighbor Lenny talked me into buying a specific brand of box fan from Ace Hardware back in 2017. He's the kind of guy who rewires his own toasters, so I figured he knew his stuff. That fan ran almost nonstop in my garage for five years before the motor finally gave out. I went and bought the exact same model again, no questions asked. Sometimes the random dude is just a guy who's been using the same tool in the same way for a decade and knows it inside out.
