That $40 instant-read thermometer I bought on Amazon was a total scam
I grabbed this cheap probe to check my brisket temps during a July 4th cookout in Nashville and it read 190 when the meat was clearly still raw in spots. Turned out it was off by almost 30 degrees, so I pulled the brisket way too early and it came out tough and dry. Anyone else get burned by a bargain thermometer that just flat out lies to you?

I had the same thing happen with a $15 probe that was off by 25 degrees on my Thanksgiving turkey.

Wow, that's rough. I gotta say though, I think the cheaper probes can be just fine if you test them first, like boiling water to see if they read 212. @umasullivan, maybe the issue is that $15 one wasn't calibrated before you used it, not that it's inherently bad. A quick ice water test would have saved your turkey.
