My uncle insisted on using a 2x6 for a deck joist and I should have listened

Ever think more lumber always meant a better build? I learned the hard way too, overbuilding a shed and wasting cash.

My neighbor pointed out I was wasting half a cabbage by not using the core in my soup, and now I never toss it.

That "chop it fine" advice is a game changer. I used to toss broccoli stems until I realized you can peel the tough outside and grate the inside for slaw (it's way cheaper than buying the florets). Carrot tops are also weirdly good in pesto instead of basil, if you don't mind a slightly earthier taste.

My corner stapler jammed on the last page of a 24-page run

Ugh, that exact jam is the worst. Had the same thing happen with a long-reach stapler on a thick comic. The Swingline 747 is a tank, it's the one they use in copy shops for a reason. You can find them used pretty cheap if you look around. That thing will punch through a phone book.

That old percolator sound takes me back every time...

Yeah, I get what you mean about missing the simplicity. My grandma's percolator was the same, always a little bitter but it was just part of the morning. I see where @janaf91 is coming from about the better taste now, and I love my good coffee too. But that old sound and smell wasn't really about the flavor, it was about the feeling of home. Now I'm over here with my scale and I sometimes laugh at myself for how serious it got.

TIL a lot of guys at my hangar are using the wrong torque sequence on cylinder base nuts

Why do manuals get ignored so often?
