He said it at a house party in Akron after our third take of a song nobody remembers, and it made me rethink how I record drums forever. Anyone have a mic setup that finally got their basement tape to breathe?
Akron 2004, that tracks. Here's the thing nobody talks about with basement drums: the room is the mic. A guy I knew in Kent spent $800 on preamps and still got mud until he hung two moving blankets on the back wall and put his kit in the corner facing out instead of into it. It sounds dumb but corners build up low end and the blankets killed just enough slap back that the close mic stopped fighting the room. Honestly the best money I ever saw spent on a basement setup was $40 at a hardware store, not a mic. The guitars were probably muddy too and just blamed the drums.
