Tried a 4 track cassette recorder for the first time, wow the hiss is real

Found an old Yamaha MT50 at a thrift store in Portland for like $30 and figured why not. I've been doing everything in a DAW since 2019, so bouncing tracks to tape felt like a whole different beast. The wow and flutter on the rhythm guitar made it sound wobbly in a way I actually liked, but the hiss buildup after three bounces was insane. I learned you gotta commit hard to levels early or everything turns into a muddy whisper. Has anyone else messed with tape just to get that lo fi grit, or did I waste a Saturday for nothing?
