PSA: my $8 thrift store rice cooker from 2011 beats the $90 one my sister bought
She called it junk when I plugged it in at her place in Tucson back in March, but it has cooked 400+ batches without a single burnt pot while hers died on batch 12, so tell me why fancy buttons and a digital timer are worth 11x the price.
The part about hers dying on batch 12 is the thing I'd push back on a little. One cooker dying early doesn't really prove that cheap ones are better, it just means your sister got a bad unit or maybe didn't treat it great. The old simple cookers with just a lever and a warm setting do tend to last, that part I agree with, because there's almost nothing in them that can break. But a digital one that dies at batch 12 was probably just a lemon, not proof that all the fancy ones are junk. My mom's cheap cooker from the 90s still works too, and my fancy Zojirushi is on year 6 with no issues, so both kinds can last or fail depending on the unit. The real lesson is that price and buttons don't tell you much about how long a thing will actually hold up.
