My brother in Knoxville swears new gear beats old gear, but my $9 tape deck says otherwise
He told me my old Sony Walkman was just nostalgia and that a phone with a good dongle sounds the same. So I popped in a dubbed cassette from a flea market in Knoxville and we sat in his driveway for an hour listening to both. The tape deck won, and he got quiet. Is there a cheap old gadget you still pick over the new stuff?
My own sad version of this is a $12 bean grinder from a yard sale that somehow makes better coffee than the fancy burr one my roommate bought. Same beans, same water, but the cheap thing has this weird uneven grind that just works. He told me it was in my head until we did a blind taste test (he picked the yard sale one twice and still won't admit it). Old stuff just had fewer ways to mess things up, honestly. Every knob did one thing and that was that.
