I picked a straight razor over clippers for my first time bald fades

Everyone told me to start with clippers for safety, but I went with a straight razor on my buddy Mike's head. It took me 45 minutes and I nicked him twice, but the blend came out way smoother than any clipper job I'd seen. Has anyone else started with the harder tool first and made it work?

Man, I gotta ask: how did you handle the angle on the back of his head? That's always the part that trips me up when I try something new on a friend. I feel like getting that even blend without a mirror is the REAL test of a straight razor job.

Ha, yeah that back-of-head spot is a total nightmare. I actually found that the secret isn't really about the angle at all. It's about which hand you use. If you're right handed, try doing that part with your left hand but approach it from the opposite side of his head. Sounds weird but it lets you see the line from a completely different angle without twisting your wrist into a knot.
