My stand mixer gear stripped mid batch of cookie dough last Tuesday

I was making my grandma's sugar cookie recipe that calls for creaming butter and sugar for like 8 minutes straight. Halfway through I heard this grinding noise and then the paddle just stopped spinning. The plastic gear inside the housing completely snapped in two. I had to finish mixing by hand with a wooden spoon which took forever and my arm got so sore. Turns out the replacement part is only $12 but you gotta take the whole thing apart to swap it. Has anyone else had their mixer fail right in the middle of a holiday baking rush?

My 2007 Pro 600 did the same thing last December 23rd. Right in the middle of whipping up a double batch of royal icing for gingerbread houses. The sacrificial gear is designed to break on purpose so it doesn't destroy the motor, that's why it's cheap plastic. I keep a spare gear and a hex key in my baking drawer now. Way better than ruining a $400 mixer over a $12 part.

Oh man that is the worst timing ever. My old KitchenAid died right as I was trying to whip egg whites for a birthday cake once, had to finish with a hand mixer and it still came out flat and sad. Plastic gears are a curse but at least the fix is cheap.
