My $45 silicone rolling mat was a total waste of money
I bought this fancy silicone rolling mat from a kitchen supply store last month thinking it would save me from sticky dough disasters. Cost me $45 which felt like a lot but I figured it would last forever. First time I used it for a sugar cookie recipe the thing slid all over my counter no matter what I did. I tried wetting the counter underneath and that helped a little but not enough. Then I baked the cookies right on the mat like the package said and the bottoms came out weirdly hard and uneven. The mat also picked up this funky smell after three bakes that I can't get out. Now I'm back to using parchment paper which costs like $3 a roll. Anyone else have better luck with those baking mats or should I just toss this thing?

$45 is insane for a silicone mat. I bought a 2 pack for $12 on Amazon that works fine for cookies. Just toss yours and get parchment instead.

Did you try preheating the mat at all before rolling out dough? I had the same problem with mine sliding everywhere and someone told me to throw it in the microwave for 30 seconds first. It didn't really help the sliding but at least the dough was warm? Yeah $45 is a bummer though. I shelled out $30 for one because all the baking blogs swore by them and now its just sitting in my drawer next to my bread machine that also didn't live up to the hype. The weird smell thing is real too, I washed mine with vinegar and baking soda and it still smells like a wet dish sponge that got left in a car.
