Found a half-burnt cake at a garage sale in Topeka last weekend

I was walking through this garage sale in Topeka and there it was, a whole layer cake on a table with the price tag still on it from Walmart for $8. The lady selling it said her daughter tried to make a lemon cake from scratch and forgot the baking soda, so it came out flat and black on one side. She put frosting on it to hide the burnt part but you could still smell the smoke when you got close. I asked how much she wanted for it and she laughed and said free, just take it. Has anyone else ever seen someone try to sell a failed bake at a yard sale?

@olivia573 you're spot on, people get creative with their failed baking projects at yard sales. My cousin once set up a table with a dozen lumpy muffins that looked more like hockey pucks than anything edible. She insisted they were "artisanal" because she used expired buttermilk and forgot the sugar. I tried one and it was basically a salt bomb with a burned bottom. She ended up giving them to a guy who fed them to his goats, which seemed like the right move. The half-burnt cake lady in Topeka at least had a good sense of humor about it, which is more than I can say for my cousin.

My neighbor actually did the same thing with a dozen burnt sugar cookies once at a community rummage sale. She left them out by accident while watching TV and they came out almost black on the bottom, so she slapped some sprinkles on them and put them in a pretty container hoping nobody would notice. I felt bad for her so I bought them for a dollar just to be nice, and honestly they tasted like charcoal with a hint of vanilla. That was a weird day, but at least your lady was honest about the burnt part and gave it away for free.
