That time my uncle swore tablets would kill laptops by 2014

Back in 2011 my uncle who worked at Best Buy told me to dump my laptop and just use an iPad for everything. He said by 2014 nobody would own a laptop anymore because tablets were the future. I almost believed him too until I tried typing a 10 page paper on that thing. Took me 3 hours and I wanted to throw the iPad through a window. Now here I am 12 years later typing this on a laptop while my iPad collects dust in a drawer. Anyone else get suckered into that early tablet hype?

Is this just how people always assume the newest thing will instantly kill everything else off?

My buddy @noahhernandez actually nailed it with that question. I remember in 2012 my cousin swore up and down that Google Glass would replace smartphones by 2016. He spent $1,500 on a pair and wore them everywhere until the battery died after 45 minutes. The worst part was trying to watch a video on those things. You had to tilt your head back so far I thought he was gonna get neck problems. Tablets were never gonna kill laptops because nobody wants to type a resume with their thumbs on a piece of glass. The hype always dies once people actually try to do real work with the shiny new thing.
