Remember when everyone thought we'd all be flying to work by 2020?
I was just as guilty as anyone, I bought a book in 1999 about future transportation and it had us commuting in personal hovercrafts by now. What finally convinced me it was nonsense was watching a single traffic jam stretch for 10 miles on I-75 last Tuesday.

75 cents of every dollar I put into the flying car stock market in 2000 went straight down the toilet. @seana14 you nailed it, traffic is the great leveler of all human ambition. At least my hovercraft failure taught me one thing - don't bet against brake lights.

Traffic jams are still the universal truth that kills every futuristic dream. We cannot even get flying cars right because people would just crash them into each other in midair. Hovercrafts would be even worse, imagine trying to navigate a parking lot in one of those things. Reality always wins over hype, and reality is endless lanes of brake lights. The future never looks like the cheesy concept art from the 90s.
