Rant: My old boss bet me $50 in 2015 that self checkout would be dead by 2020
He swore up and down that people hated scanning their own stuff and stores would rip the machines out within 5 years. I took that bet in the break room at the Kroger on High Street in Columbus and he was so sure about it. We lost touch after he moved, but I still think about that $50 every time I stand in a self checkout line at 9 pm. Did anyone else have a boss or teacher who was 100% certain some tech would flop and got it so wrong?
That "people hated scanning their own stuff" line is gold. I had a manager in 2016 who swore nobody would ever pay with their phone, and here I am tapping my card at the gas pump without even opening my wallet. If you ever track that old boss down, cash that $50 and put it toward something dumb, you earned it.
