I laughed at a 2005 blog saying we'd all video call from our fridges, then my sister's smart fridge called me in Tulsa
Three years ago I found a 2005 tech blog post in an archive thread and saved a screenshot because it said we would all video chat from our fridge doors by 2010, and I thought that was the funniest dumb guess I had ever seen. Then a couple weeks back my sister in Tulsa got one of those screen fridges, and I kid you not, the thing rang me during dinner so she could show me her leftovers. I sat there staring at her fridge on my phone and had to admit the old blogger basically called it, just 15 years off. Now I keep thinking about which current guesses will look just as silly, or just as right, in 20 years. Which old prediction did you all write off as nonsense that actually came true?
A guy named Dave Winer wrote in like 1999 that everyone would have their own website someday and we all laughed because who has time for that, and now my dentist has a blog about teeth. I had a Palm Pilot in 2003 and felt like a wizard, and everyone told me phones would never do all that stuff. My advice if you want to spot the real ones: look for predictions that sound boring instead of cool. Nobody screenshots the boring ones, which is why the fridge guy got you. The stuff that comes true is usually stuff people already wanted to do, they just wanted it while sitting down.
