Hot take: that 2006 magazine I found at a yard sale changed my mind about smartwatches
I used to think the people who laughed at early smartwatch takes were just being smug, but then I read a 2006 Wired piece in a $2 yard sale stack near Dayton that said we'd all be checking email on our wrists by 2010, which of course never happened. What got me was the writer confidently saying watches would be dead by 2012, and now I'm seeing teens at my gym wearing them again. Anyone else got an old magazine prediction that aged way worse than they expected?

Gotta disagree with the framing here. That Wired writer wasn't totally wrong, he was just early. We ARE checking stuff on our wrists now, it just took until like 2015 to 2020 instead of 2010. The tech was always gonna get there, the battery and screen tech just wasn't ready yet.
And the "watches are dead" call is actually the one that aged fine in a weird way. Regular watches basically became jewelry for most people, they don't tell time anymore, they're just fashion. The smartwatch is a totally different thing that happens to sit on your wrist.
