Told my digital art was too flat, so I stopped relying on a single layer

Been posting my late night doodles here for months and someone finally said my shading looked like I just used the airbrush tool once and called it done. They recommended I block out separate shadow and highlight layers before blending anything together. Has anyone else gotten one piece of feedback that totally changed their whole process?

My first real critique was about my line art being too stiff. Someone said I should try drawing with my elbow instead of my wrist for longer strokes. That one tip alone made my lines go from shaky to smooth in like a week. Sounds small but it totally unlocked the whole flow thing for me. Now I always tell new artists to loosen up their arm and not just their fingers.

Wait, did you actually feel the difference in your shoulder when you switched from wrist to elbow? I tried that after a tutorial said the same thing but it felt super unnatural for weeks and I kept falling back into my old habit of just using my fingers for everything. What did you do to force yourself to stick with it long enough for it to click?
