Trail math finally made sense after a chat with a retired ranger at Glacier
Ran into this old guy at a backcountry permit desk last month. He looked at my planned 18 mile day and just laughed. Said he'd seen more hikers blow out their knees on downhill miles than uphill climbs, so I flipped my route to save the steep descent for morning. Sure enough, my legs felt way fresher on day two. Anyone else rethink their daily mileage after talking to park staff?
